Directors of the KHA
January of this year (2009) brought about a change for the KHA, when Dean Baker handed the reins over to Jeffrey A. Herot as the new club President. Jeff will have a large pair of boots to fill, but is looking forward to the great adventures ahead.
Ephraim Stoltzfus
Ephraim Stoltzfus lives on a small farmette in Lancaster County. He first became interested in the Haflinger horse because they are the perfect size for small acreages. But he became hooked on Haflingers after attending his first auction and meeting the people who love the breed. He has bred and raised some fine Haflingers and at one time stood two stallions. Ephraim has served the last two terms as our club treasurer and he and his family is involved on many levels in most of our club activities. Ephraim and his family have been with KHA from the first organizational meeting and he served two terms as Treasurer. This year he takes on the challenge as Keystone’s third President.
Elmer King
Elmer King continues his second year as Vice President. Elmer grew up on a 60 acre farm using mules for the farm work. In 1996 his father purchased some Haflingers and in 1997 Elmer began to breed and train his own Haflinger horses, using them on their small farm. Elmer and his family have also been with KHA since its conception, always working behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly and this year hosting the annual Wagon Train.
Anne Wagner has been an avid horse woman since childhood, enjoying trail riding, fox hunting and giving lessons. She was introduced to Haflinger horses when a friend asked her to haul a team of mares. Anne was impressed with their calm natures and kind temperament and soon began searching for one of her own. In 2002 she attended the KHA January Keystone Haflinger Sale and purchased her first Haflinger. Since then Anne has owned many Haflinger horses, been active in our club and headed up our Wagon Train games, putting the "fun" in our Fun Day as well as serving on our board of directors. Anne’s husband is active with KHA, oft times behind the scenes, and her daughter Sue is usually by her side. Anne is in her second year as KHA Secretary.
Jim Johnson
Jim is one of the driving forces at Horse Expo. His is the smiling face that always greets you at the KHA booth; he’ll also be the fellow that modestly denies his important role in Expo and the first to recognize the other folks who generously give of their time and talents to make Expo a success. Jim was for many years the chairman of the Eastern Amateur Arabian Horse Show Circuit, an experience that prepared him well for his position as KHA Treasurer. Jim and his wife were looking for a horse that would fit in with their semi-retired life style when in 2002 they discovered their first Haflinger, and in their search for an organization revolving around the breed, they found and joined Keystone.
Abner Lantz
Abner Lantz's first experience with Haflingers occurred when he attended an auction. He had heard about Haflingers and on that day purchased a bred mare. Soon after the foal was born Abner purchased two more horses and began breeding Haflingers - he now owns five. Abner and his wife are active behind the scenes, especially during the Wagon Train. He is in his second year as a Director.
Jacob Calvin King
Haflinger Horses intrigued Jacob King for many years. He was a harness maker and began to take an interest in the breed. He purchased his first Haflinger 5 years ago and noted the famous phrase that all Haflinger lovers know "You can't have just one!" The economics of this compact and hearty breed along with the smaller size of his farm helped him grow to appreciate the breed even more. Jacob and his family are active in raising and training Haflingers, and worked hard to make KHA’s first Haflinger Sale successful. He is serving his second year as a Director.
The Haflinger Express Editor
Although no longer a board member, Elaine Durlin works closely with the BOD, participating in meetings and active in KHA events. Usually busy snapping photographs for the organization, her award winning photos can be found at the local fair competitions, in magazines, and more importantly, in the club newsletter, The Haflinger Express. Starting with the first meeting, she has been active with KHA, wearing many hats, serving two terms as Director, one term as Secretary, promoting and assisting in the development of the first website, and except for a short period of time, Editor of the Express. Her love of Haflingers began with a search for a safe mount for her daughter, culminating in the purchase of Caress, a short Haflinger “as round as a pumpkin”. Elaine’s family continues to support and encourage her as she fulfills her duties as Editor and pursues her hobby as freelance writer and photographer.
